‘Tis the season to be jolly and help those who are less fortunate. Although the holidays are a great time to give-back to the community, here at Primavera we want to encourage volunteering as a year-round activity so we’ve compiled a list of just a few opportunities around the Valley that could be right for you.

  • Arizona Humane Society
“The goal of our volunteer program is to engage compassionate animal lovers – just like you! We need you to help us in our mission to safeguard, rescue, shelter, heal, adopt and advocate for animals in need!”
If your passion is being around animals, the Arizona Humane Society could be a fit for you. They’re all over the Valley and you can search available openings on their site.
Requirements: You must be at least 16 years of age, attend the required training for your area of interest and make a commitment of at least eight hours a month for at least eight months.
  • Read To Me at the Salvation Army’s Family Homeless Shelter
“Provide quality time reading one-on-one or in small groups with children ages 4-8 in this family homeless shelter.”
As a volunteer, you will be able to meet new people and learn about issues of family homelessness while devoting time to kids in need.
Requirements: The minimum age to volunteer is 14 but volunteers under 17 must be accompanied by an adult or bring a signed Youth Waiver Form.
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona
“Being a Big Brother or Big Sister is one of the most enjoyable things you’ll ever do…You have the opportunity to help shape a child’s future for the better by empowering them to achieve.”
This is a great way to share life experiences with those younger than you and spend some time doing things that are fun for the both of you.
Requirements: Volunteering is just a few hours a month but you must be 18 years and meet a few other requirements.
  • United Food Bank

The United Food Bank has multiple volunteer opportunities available, check their website for details.
Requirements: For ages 12-15, an adult or guardian must accompany you and if you’re 16 and 17, you don’t need an adult or guardian with you but they must sign off on your volunteer waiver.
  • St. Vincent de Paul
“Each year, St. Vincent de Paul helps thousands of homeless people get off the street, and prepares over 1 million hot meals for the hungry.”
On holidays, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul uses many short-term volunteers to prepare meals, serve meals, and work on clean up after the meals. You may search the St. Vincent de Paul website for opportunities tailored to your age and interests.
Requirements: Age requirements vary but the minimum age for some dining rooms is 14 years old and does not require adult supervision. Other opportunities such as their Thrift Store require adult supervision if you’re 14 or younger. For those ages 16 and older can volunteer without adult supervision. A Waiver form, signed by a parent, is required for all volunteers under age 18.

Benefits of Volunteering

Not only does volunteering allow you to spend time doing something impactful, it can also help your resume when the it’s time to apply for a job. You’ll get a chance to meet and interact with new people and talk about what you enjoy doing, what your goals and dreams are and it can open a lot of doors for you in the future. These organizations are only a few of the many out there looking for your support.

Volunteering in your field of interest is a great option because you’ll be in an environment similar to your potential career but, regardless of what organization you decide to help, the volunteering experience is always a great asset to have in life. It reflects good qualities such as commitment, willingness to help and to work on a team and it shows you have the drive to help solve problems and fill a need.

Remember, giving back is often a reward in itself and you can also create amazing memories.
