This month, students in the S.T.E.M. program at Primavera’s Blended Learning Center took a trip to The Biosphere 2 in Tucson, Arizona. The center’s mission is to serve as a center for research, outreach, teaching and life-long learning about Earth, its living systems, and its place in the universe.
BLC students were able to tour the facilities, allowing them to better appreciate the history of the building itself and learn how it is used to study Earth system science. During the tour, the students observed several ongoing research projects related to climate change and microbial species interactions with plant life.
In addition, students were able to visit the basement area to learn about the machines that control the systems in the Biosphere.
Blended Learning Center’s S.T.E.M. students are currently studying climate conditions as well as weather and found the Biosphere 2 trip extremely helpful to their studies.
“They enjoyed learning about how the Biosphere can be used to manipulate climate conditions to better study what might happen in the natural environment,” said Christy Meza, science instructor.
