“Everyone Wears a Smile”

A Poem by Elizabeth Aparo

Everyone wears a smile

Everyone wears a smile over a frown

Everyone wears one to hide when they’re down

I wish to see the story the curves of their expression give

I wish to see their mind and have a feel for how they live

Some are better than others at hiding these little lies

These little lies are meant to be seen by more than just eyes

These people must be heard and I feel like it’s my duty

To tell them someone understands and make them believe it

Truly

But, I want to converse with everyone

I don’t just want to tell them what I’ve done

I want to tell them what they did and how they’ve overcome

I want people to recover from life’s tragedies

I want people to understand there’s more than pain and grief

I want them to know if they need someone, that someone is me

The human mind is a maze and amazing

It can bring the happiest people down

It can bring the saddest people to the sky soaring

I dream that people don’t just have to dream to be content

I want them to find happiness and feel committed to it

I’ll show everyone that his or her smile is real

It’s not just something to hide the pain

It’s something that gets you through and keeps you sane

My dream is that everyone who wears a smile is truly smiling inside

Everyone’s smile should have nothing to hide

I want to stop everyone who wears a smile to mask a frown

No longer will anyone’s smile be a shield to hide when they are down
