Hey there, ol’ sports! If you can believe it, prom is only about a month away, happening Saturday, May 14 from 7 – 11 p.m. at the Windemere Hotel in Mesa. The theme this year is Glitz and Glamour: A Night at Gatsby’s, and now’s the time to start thinking about dressing up Gatsby style.
Of course, dressing in the 1920s theme for prom is not required, but is certainly encouraged and there will even be a few prizes for those who best incorporate the theme into their prom attire! To help you get started, we’ve gathered a couple ideas to fit right in at Gatsby’s Manor (a.k.a the Windemere Hotel)
Ideas for Accessorizing Gatsby Style
When it comes to fashion, the Gatsby era–which setting took place in the 1920s–is one of the most fun times for both the ladies and gentlemen. When you think Gatsby or the 20s, think fancy: suit vests, bow ties, pearls and, of course, the flapper headband. Though they appear fancy and intricate, the flapper style headband is actually super easy to make. Check out the instructions below to see how you can make an inexpensive one yourself. The materials listed below may already be items you have laying around in your house. If not, they can be easily found at your nearest craft store, dollar store or department store. 1. Measure the amount of material needed for your headband by wrapping it around your head and cut off excess material. Fasten together the headband accordingly using a dab of hot glue, then pinch the two ends together to dry. If you purchased a headband, skip this step. 2. Place the headband on your head again and pinpoint where you want the feather. Usually, feathers are on the either the right or left side near the ear. 3. Once you’ve determined the best spot, hot glue your feather(s) onto the backside of the headband. 4. Add on the beads, jewels and other accessories to the headband using the hot glue gun. Once finished, you can enjoy sporting a flapper headband likes the ones below. The cat eye eyeliner shape is always a go-to and simple enough way to give a vintage feel to your makeup. Also two great ways to look 1920s: simple updos and pearls. While we might not be giving you how-to DIY instructions (though you’re welcome to try!), men still have some great fashion ideas to incorporate so you can look like Gatsby himself. Check out the photos below. As you can see, dressing in the ’20s was all about looking dapper. Try some nice loafers and break out those bow ties and suspenders, because those will be all the rage at Gatsby’s manor! Hair styling also sports a nice slicked back look, and adding on a cool vintage watch like in the photo above certainly won’t hurt. Don’t forget, dressing up in the 1920s Gatsby theme is not required, but it is encouraged and there will be prizes!
