Every day, people are working to solve the problems around us. Whether it’s finding the cure to a disease or something simpler like designing their very own custom Peyton emoji, we are all passionate about creating something new.

This November 8 is National S.T.E.M. Day. The acronym stands for science, technology, engineering and math, and it is a day to celebrate those innovative characters who work hard to create valuable solutions for society.

We can’t think of any better way to celebrate than by participating in some DIY S.T.E.M. activities. To help you get some ideas, we’ve put a list together of some fun things you can try at home.

S.T.E.M. Day Activities

  • Check out a S.T.E.M. app
  • Use some leftover Halloween candy to challenge yourself and see if your sense of taste is sharp enough to correctly guess which candy you’re sampling while you’re blindfolded.
  • Or, if you’ve run out, try this scientific Rock Candy recipe.
  • Better yet, make your own Icee with just a soda bottle and a cold bowl by watching this cool video.
  • Get out and explore! Go on a hike and observe the nature around you.
  • Plant a garden and track the growth progress of the plants.
  • Go star gazing and try to identify constellations in the sky.
  • Take a look at some of these mind-boggling optical illusions.
  • Or, if you’re feeling really adventurous, build your own hovercraft you can ride with materials from home!

Those are just a list of some of the ways you can celebrate, but the possibilities are endless! Find an activity you enjoy, then go out and do it! And once you do, don’t forget to tag us in some of your photos on Facebook or Instagram for a chance to be featured in a blog post.

“S.T.E.M. is important in education because it teaches students how to think about real world problems and generate solutions for those.  In addition many career fields use S.T.E.M. areas and we are currently projected to have a shortage of people to fill these positions in the near future.”
