The Panther Post features talented Primavera students with a love for the arts. This month, we’re sharing an inspiring poem written by Primavera student Jacob McNeer, talking about guilt and its consuming power. His work was discovered by English teacher Jennifer Hester who after reading his empowering words couldn’t help but to share.

Guilt, My Friend

Darkness sparked my waking haze,
never did I fear the end that follow days;
I’d sleep it through, ’til my dreadful fight
against the cowering malevolence that crept at night.
It stomped in silence across the halls,
and peeked at me from all the walls.
When the lights went out, and the sun went down
it stalked the floors and waited to find me all around.

I’ve kept my home a secret,
my fears and feats beneath it.
But it surfaced and never stopped,
if I were stupid, I’d have called the cops!
Even if they would’ve, they couldn’t have helped
me from the wrath that made me yelp.
You see, it’s all because of me
for prolonging what needed to be.

I created Guilt, and he shadowed me like a frame
depicting my wrongs and altering my fame.
It was he that followed me to correct what I had done,
and he told me, “You knew and said nothing,
you saw and should’ve done something!”

He was right; it was my eyes that I turned blind,
and so I put myself into this bind.
I used to be haunted by my thought,
but forgiveness is what I was taught.
